Dance without gravity.

Underwater dance is dance without gravity: your whole body moving to music, held by the water, with no tail. It builds strength, breath control and grace, and it photographs like nothing else. Aliyah teaches MFI's underwater dance path, mostly one-to-one, in a pool.

No tail No dance experience needed Mostly one-to-one
The ladder

From the pool floor to the stage.

Bring a swimsuit and a towel. No tail, no fins: just you and the music.

Who is it for?

Anyone who loves to move.

No dance experience is needed: D1 starts on land, with the steps and shapes, before you take them into the water. Dancers find a new way to move, and swimmers a new way to be in the water.

You do need to be comfortable in the water. D1 asks you to swim 25 m and float for three minutes before you start, and Aliyah teaches the breathing and calm that let you stay down long enough to dance.

Why learn with Aliyah?

A champion who danced first.

Aliyah was an award-winning belly dancer long before she danced underwater, so the dance gets as much care as the water. She trained under the underwater dance instructor August Ho, became an MFI Underwater Dance Instructor, and in 2024 won the Underwater Dance Competition at ADEX Singapore.

Most lessons are one-to-one, so the choreography is shaped around you, and you are never in the water alone.

Course by course

What you will learn.

D1

Underwater Dance

The foundation. You learn how to stay down and stay calm: breathing before a dive, sinking without fighting the water, and holding your position. Then come the basic steps and shapes, first on land and then in the pool, joined into your first short routine. To earn the certificate you perform that routine and show the safety skills: a calm surfacing, a rescue tow, and a short written test.

D2

Advanced Underwater Dance

From steps to performance. You dance at two levels, on the pool floor and in mid-water, with flowing movements that carry from one depth to the other. Breath control goes further, and you learn to rescue a partner underwater. You finish by performing a routine at each level. For D1 dancers who want to perform, on camera or on stage.

Questions

Asked before every first lesson.

Most lessons are one student and one instructor, which is how Aliyah prefers to teach: her attention stays on you, and the lesson moves at your pace. Friends can book a class together, never more than four, each at the usual course fee.

Yes. Discover Mermaid (PADI) and Basic Mermaid M (MFI) need no swimming test and stay in water where you can stand. The other courses ask for a short swim first, listed on each course.

From age 6 for most courses; each course lists its minimum age. An adult must be at the pool for children under 16, and anyone under 18 needs a parent's consent.

Start from what you want. To pose, perform and move beautifully in a tail, look at MFI Mermaid. To dance to music without a tail, Underwater Dance. To build water skills step by step, towards basic freediving in a tail, PADI Mermaid. Both mermaid paths lead to a recognised certification. Not sure? Ask us.

A swimsuit and a towel. Everything else for the lesson is lent to you.

No. Underwater dance is your own body moving in the water, with no tail.

No. D1 starts from the basics, on land first, then in the water. Dancers find it a new way to move; non-dancers find it surprisingly natural.

That depends on the pool. You learn to be calm at the bottom before you dance there.
